2025 Scholarship recipient Harper Egge, graduate of Roosevelt High School, Des Moines
"Now it’s summer and I am once again tasked with finding a good way to spend it. I look to my future as a freshman in college studying film and television direction. My dream is to become a professional storyteller, using a script and a camera to tell my own stories. I’m nervous about the challenge of my classes. But I am reminded of other seemingly impossible things I’ve achieved, thanks to libraries and books. I thought about everything that led me to being able to work through The Brothers Karamazov: I thought about struggling to sound out the big words in The Magic Treehouse. About Mrs. Hankenson giving me books above my reading level to encourage me to reach higher. I thought about those huge Harry Potter books I loved. And I think back to the Summer Reading Challenge, and how it was so much more than just something to do over the summer. It sparked a lifelong love of storytelling and challenged me to achieve new heights. I take all these memories and more with me on this next chapter of my life."
